In addition to Tenerife, Gran Canaria is the major tourist hot spot of the Canary isles. With all year sunshine and enjoyable temperatures from sunrise till’ well into the night it’s great to relax on the island when the winter storms rages through Northern Europe where I live.
Access
Gran Canaria is the best island to stay on if you want to explore the other islands. Because it’s the most populated island and is centrally located, boat trips and plane rides from the airport of this island to other islands such as Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are frequent and reliable. Each island is unique so if you have the time, go explore.
The Beaches
There’s debate among which island has got the best beaches but I love the great beaches. With more than 200 kilometers of coastline, Gran Canaria has a little of everything. Sandy, rocky, you name it, this isle has it. I prefer the endless sand of the Maspalomas Sand Dunes. Playa de Ingles lines the dunes and though it’s well-liked by tourists, it’s possible to find a nice quiet spot on this massive beach.
Papas arrugadas (Canarian potatoes)
Maybe there are people out there that don’t like potatoes or delicious dipping sauces, but I am not one of them. Before I left the island, I grabbed two papas arrugadas recipes. Papas arrugadas certainly are a traditional island dish of boiled new potatoes served with a red and green mojo, or sauce. Some may find these sauces spicy. I just think they’re delicious.
The People
As is characteristic of many islanders, Gran Canaria residents are really laid back. Many people living on the island have moved to the island from mainland Spain or other areas of Europe so they know what it’s like to be a newcomer and will generally go out of their way to assist you to should you ask.
Puerto Rico
This southern port city has a reputation as one the sunniest places on the island. I had plenty of sun regardless of where I was on the island but I loved Puerto Rico because it was a nice respite from bustling city life in Las Palmas. While there’s plenty to do in Puerto Rico, it’s a fantastic place to spend a day people watching, reading and relaxing.
