Monterey Bay Aquarium: A Trip to the Bottom of the Sea
With over 550 different species of plants and animals, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is sure to be a delight to all ages in your family. The Monterey Bay Aquarium receives over 1.8 million visitors each year, since their opening in October of 1984. You may find that it is better to take a tour of the exhibits, or that your family enjoys a leisurely stroll through each exhibit at their own pace. The water is kept at 50 degrees Fahrenheit. A majority of the water that is used comes directly from the Monterey Bay, and this helps to feed many of the animals in the exhibits, as it contains plankton. If your little ones are scared that one of the tanks may break, reassure them that they are anywhere from 3 to 13 inches in width and will not break.
You may notice that the aquarium exhibits contain only animals and plants that are located in the Monterey Bay area. Also, you will not find an exhibit contain whales, dolphins or sea lions. The originators felt that it was better to view them in their natural surrounds in the Bay and you may occasionally see some of them from the deck of the aquarium. Cameras and video are welcome, although the Aquarium asks that you look for signs that state when to turn off your flash, as it may harm some animals that are not used to harsh or flashing lights. Your family will enjoy an afternoon of seeing animals that they ordinarily would not get a glimpse of, and will cherish the memories of these animals for yeas to come.
