The St Louis, Missouri Gateway Arch
Home of the Gateway Arch and affectionately nicknamed The Gateway to the West, St Louis has a history that spans over three hundred years and was once referred to as the American Frontier’s last outpost. Over the centuries and decades, the city has seen it triumphs and tragedies and those living there appreciate the historical value of both. Purchased as part of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, the original settlement was nestled within the junction of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.St Louis saw a boom during the early 1800s as the first steamboat finally and successfully navigated the great Mississippi River which in turn created an easy and simple method of transportation. This subsequently generated a sharp increase in trade and population.
During the middle 1800s, war had struck Europe and large numbers of German, Irish and Italian immigrants made their way across the sea to St. Louis. As part of the Oregon Trail, the original intent was to move further west; however, many opted to stay in the area instead.
With an increase in population and boom in building, St Louis was struck, in 1849, with a cholera outbreak which took more than ten percent of its residents. That same year the docked steamboat, White Cloud, caught fire and the flames quickly spread throughout large sections of the town and after eight hours of battling the heat and fire it was believed the entire town would be lost.
Black powder kegs were detonated in a daring attempt to arrest and halt the spread of the fire. The remainder of St Louis was saved and an ordinance was passed allowing only stone and brick structures in the future. St Louis quickly become famous with the introduction of Budweiser in 1876, Purina Mills Company, founded in 1893 and as host of the 1904 World’s Fair.Today, the area boasts a rich history and cultural diversity and offers a number historical landmarks and buildings that offer a look into the past. The 630 foot tall Gateway Arch, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site and Old Courthouse and Old Cathedral are a few of the sites well worth a visit. Fall in step with the various families and immigrants whose tales are told in a stark and colorful manner or walk through the Civil War with a stop at White Haven or Jefferson Barracks Historic Park.
Regardless of the reason for the visit, it’s easy to see the depth and personality of, not only the city but the residents as well. Friendly people, charming neighborhoods, historical sites, cultural and sporting events all beckon those with a desire for adventure.
