Activities in Aiken, South Carolina

Aiken SCThe city of Aiken owes its beauty to its history. This picturesque community has preserved the city’s historic character and there are a number of places of tourist interest here including the various museums and golf clubs.

Aiken County Historical Museum
This museum which is housed in the Banksia (formerly a winter colony mansion) aims to collect and preserve all historical material related to the Aiken county. Entry is free and the museum is open between 10 to 5 pm between Tuesday and Saturday and 2 to 5 pm on Sunday. Amongst its continuously changing exhibits you can find the Odell Weeks Room, the Agricultural Room (Aiken County – once the asparagus capital of the world), our Military Hall Exhibit, the Pottery Exhibit, the Winter Colony Room, the Golf Exhibit, etc.

Aiken Golf Club
In a state made for golf, Aiken offers some of the best golf course layouts for enthusiasts. The Aiken Golf Club steeped in golf history remains one of the oldest courses in the country. Situated in the middle of the town, it plays 5,734 yards from the Medal Tees, 5,361 yards from the Mid Tees and 4,572 from the Fore Tees.

Hopelands Gardens
The city is also home to the beautiful garden which was bequeathed to the City of Aiken by Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin. This 14-acre estate will surely delight nature lovers with grassy fields, flower beds, magnolia trees through the many paths around it. The property also houses the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, the Dollhouse, and the Carriage Museum. It is located at Whiskey Road and Dupree Place.

Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve
This 1,622-acre wildlife sanctuary is home to the rare and state-listed endangered gopher tortoise. You can also find the longleaf pine/wiregrass community, one of the most endangered in the south east here.

Aiken County Farmers Market
Designated as a landmark in Aiken and remains the oldest (in continuous operation at the same location) county farmers’ market in the State of South Carolina. When you visit this market you will find descendants of the early farmers who continue to bring produce and flowers to the market. They set their goods on tables that were used by their parents and grandparents.

DuPont Planetarium and RPSEC Observatory
It hosts a number of programs including live presentations of the stars and planets visible in the sky and other programs on astronomy. The planetarium is a 30 ft. diameter dome and can seat 45 people. Private shows can be arranged as well.
