Things to Do in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang MaiNot many tourists know that it is not only in Bangkok that you can spend a Thai holiday with friends and family. One great choice is the city of Chiang Mai, which is an exotic city ideal for vacations and tours. From rafting to jungle trekking to simple activities such as shopping and clubbing during the night, you surely will enjoy your trip to the city of Chiang Mai.

Rafting
Any tourists will enjoy rafting down the well-known Maetang River. This activity is often combined with mountain biking and elephant riding. Many rafting adventure companies offer 10-kilometer rafting trips along the river. Rafting in this river is most exciting from the months of June to October, when the water levels are higher.

River Cruising
Taking a cruise down the Ping river is one of the best ways to spend your vacation in Chiang Mai. The cruise is done on a sail boat and lasts a day. This is a popular choice for romantic dates and intimate parties.

Spending Time with the Elephants
Because Thailand is known for its elephants, you may want to experience an adventure with the elephants in Chiang Mai. Pay a visit to the Maesa Elephant Camp at Tapae Road, which is half an hour drive from the center of the city. The place features an elephant show and a half hour to one hour ride with the elephants.

The Baanchang Elephant Park is located at the Rachadamnoen Road and is another place where you can appreciate Thailand’s elephants. It is the cheapest place that offers elephant entertainments. They also allow people to stay overnight for camping. During the night, the hosts provide night entertainment such as releasing fire lanterns into the sky.

Enjoying Muay Thai
Thai boxing is Thailand’s national sport and one good way to experience Thailand’s culture is to watch Muay Thai fights. At the Loi Kroh Boxing Stadium located near the city’s Night Bazaar is where Muay Thai fights are held at least three to four times every week. Thai fighters are occasionally paired with foreign fighters, but the fights are usually between Thai people. The admission costs 400 to 600 Baht, depending on the seat assigned to you. If you are on a budget, you may go there at around 11pm when the stadium is opened for free admission.

Watching Movies in Chiang Mai
If you are spending a long vacation in the city and you feel that you have done every Chiang Mai adventure possible, you may want to relax and spend your day watching a good movie. There are two big cinemas in Chiang Mai. First is the Vista Cinema located at the Kad Suen Kaew, which doesn’t have 3D films but has clear screens and oozing cinema surround sounds that make movie watching more enjoyable. Depending on the duration of the film, the tickets are priced from 80 to 120 Baht.

Another cinema complex that you may visit is the Major Cineplex located at the Airport Plaza. The ticket price is higher compared to Chiang Mai Vista Cinema, which ranges from 120 to 260 Baht depending on the movie you are watching and the type of seat assigned to you.
